We were expecting early sunshine this morning, but never got it. That kept me from starting until about 12:15, but once I got cutting I never stopped. Dad came and relieved me about 4:45 this afternoon, and probably has about two hours ahead of him to finish out our "big" field (and another two if he decides to cut our "little" field). The bermudagrass wasn't quite as tall as I would have liked it to be, but if we continue to get moisture over the next few weeks we should get another solid cutting off of it this year.

Hay Day, part II
We were expecting early sunshine this morning, but never got it. That kept me from starting until about 12:15, but once I got cutting I never stopped. Dad came and relieved me about 4:45 this afternoon, and probably has about two hours ahead of him to finish out our "big" field (and another two if he decides to cut our "little" field). The bermudagrass wasn't quite as tall as I would have liked it to be, but if we continue to get moisture over the next few weeks we should get another solid cutting off of it this year.
Hay Day
We'll start laying down some Tifton 44 bermudagrass for hay late this morning. We'll be cutting approximately 30 acres from our two fields near Mt. Pisgah church. It will be an all-day thing, I suspect, since we haven't gotten our New Idea mowers repaired yet. Our Gehl cutter/conditioner will cover some ground pretty quick on long runs, but there are so many terraces in our hay fields that you lose a lot of time having to turn around so much. Anyway, our plan is to fluff the hay tomorrow and then rake and bale it on Friday.

Happy 4th of July
It's Independence Day, and that means we're only planning on working a "short" full day.
We've already milked the cows this morning and will go back after breakfast to feed heifers and clean the place up a little bit. I'm hoping we'll be done somewhere between 10:00-10:30. After lunch, we'll come back and milk the cows again but that should be about it. We'll probably be done about 3:30, which will give me a little time to rest before firing up the grill for tonight.
Looking forward a little bit, our rain chances over the next ten days are a little more promising. There's no promise of how much we might get, but right now there's enough chances that surely we'll get one thunderstorm to rain on us. We desperately need it, and not just for our hay and pastures. Once we get some moisture, we'll be able to plant our sorghum-sudangrass (sudex) crop.
Speaking of hay, dad finished baling our first "pure" cutting of bermudagrass late yesterday morning. We had 63 bales of Russell bermudagrass off of 13 acres and 146 bales of Tifton 44 off of 31 acres. Not bad considering how dry its been. We have another 20 acres or so of Russell that's ready to be cut as soon as the weather forecast is favorable.

Two weeks 'til hay time
We took a look at our hayfields yesterday, and have decided that they'll probably do to cut in about two weeks. Neither of our bermudagrass varieties (Tifton 44 and Russell) will give us a great first cutting on yield or quality the way the weather's been the last two months. But once we clip the hay and get some fertilizer on the fields they should both do really well (if it continues to rain like it has the last couple of weeks).
Speaking of rain, we got a slow 3 inches on Saturday, and a pretty quick, stormy 2.5 yesterday.
